India has teamed up with the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya to launch the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform, aiming to enhance multilateral cooperation and advocate for reform in global institutions. The announcement was made during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of stronger multilateral collaboration amidst growing geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He underscored the need for participatory discussions and transparent decision-making within international bodies to address these challenges effectively.
The P4M initiative seeks to address critical areas needing international cooperation, such as international security, climate change, and emerging technologies. It also focuses on development finance, resilient supply chains, pandemic preparedness, and counterterrorism, highlighting the diverse range of issues requiring collective action.
In its declaration, the P4M platform underscored the necessity of reforming the multilateral system to enhance its effectiveness, representativeness, and inclusivity. Members pledged to collaborate on sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and global health.
The member nations have agreed to set up a coordination mechanism and identify priority areas for joint action. The platform remains open to other countries interested in strengthening multilateral cooperation, signaling an inclusive approach to tackling global challenges.
