Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold rallies across the state from October 13 to October 31. The rallies aim to counter what the party perceives as Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma emphasized that these peaceful rallies would take place at district headquarters to demonstrate support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to bolster public trust in constitutional institutions.
Sarma accused the Congress party and other opposition groups of politically targeting vital institutions such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He criticized Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that the process is crucial for addressing voter list concerns and issues related to illegal immigration in Assam.
The chief minister also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of applying inconsistent standards to election results based on the winning party. Sarma further criticized Gandhi for exerting political pressure on the Supreme Court, arguing that constitutional institutions should remain free from such influence.
The BJP’s planned rallies are intended to emphasize support for democratic institutions and contest the Congress party’s stance on electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration-related issues in Assam.
