Shiv Sena (UBT) is grappling with a significant internal challenge as two of its Lok Sabha members, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have defected to the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the party. This move adds weight to the revolt against Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, with a total of six MPs now siding with the dissidents. Ashtikar cited the lack of development funds for his area and discontent over comments directed at rebel MPs as reasons for his switch, though he insisted he remains true to Shiv Sena’s core values, simply transitioning to a different faction to more effectively serve his constituency.
Nimbalkar also confirmed his allegiance to the Shinde group but emphasized his commitment to consulting with his supporters before deciding on his political path forward. Despite the shift, he has made it clear that he will not criticize Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray, maintaining a degree of respect amidst the political turmoil. This development has heightened tensions within Maharashtra’s political landscape, with accusations being exchanged between the factions.
In response to these defections, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut mentioned that some of the defected MPs are still in communication with the party and are wary of facing backlash in their home constituencies. Raut added that the party remains open to dialogue with those willing to return. The Uddhav Thackeray faction has initiated disciplinary measures against the defectors, issuing show-cause notices and threatening potential consequences under the anti-defection law if they do not justify their actions.
Furthermore, there are discussions within the party about approaching the Lok Sabha Speaker to seek disqualification of these MPs should they fail to respond satisfactorily. As the political discord continues, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed claims that it has influenced the defections, further intensifying the political drama in the region.
