Syed Asim Waqar Leaves AIMIM, Joins Congress Before UP Elections

-

In a significant political shift ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year, Syed Asim Waqar, who served as the national spokesperson for the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has joined the Congress party. The announcement was made at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, where Waqar was welcomed by prominent figures such as Rajendra Pal Gautam, the Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge, state Congress president Ajay Rai, and Imran Pratapgarhi, chairman of the AICC Minority Department.

Waqar’s move to Congress marks a notable departure from his previous allegiance to the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM. In explaining his decision, Waqar criticized his former party for allegedly targeting Congress and other opposition groups like the Samajwadi Party, rather than focusing on defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized the need for opposition unity to challenge the BJP’s dominance, asserting that Congress and Rahul Gandhi are pivotal in this national effort.

Once a key figure for AIMIM in Uttar Pradesh, Waqar was known for his close relationship with party leader Owaisi. His defection comes at a time when AIMIM is attempting to broaden its influence in the state, with an eye on the 2027 Assembly elections. Despite this strategic expansion, Waqar’s departure could signal a realignment of opposition forces, potentially bolstering Congress’s position as it seeks to consolidate support against the ruling BJP.

While Waqar’s shift to Congress may strengthen the party’s efforts in Uttar Pradesh, the broader electoral implications remain to be seen. His decision underscores the ongoing political dynamics and challenges faced by opposition parties in India, particularly in forming a united front against the BJP. With the elections on the horizon, Waqar’s move could be a catalyst for further political realignments in the region.
