Nana Patekar Passes Away at 75, Leaving a Lasting Legacy in Bollywood

-

Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar has passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026, leaving behind a significant legacy in Bollywood and Marathi cinema. Known for his intense performances and distinctive style, Patekar challenged traditional Bollywood hero archetypes and garnered acclaim for his complex character portrayals throughout a career spanning nearly five decades.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he made his film debut in the 1978 Hindi movie “Gaman” and soon transitioned to Marathi films. His breakthrough came with the 1984 film “Aaj Ki Awaz,” which led to his recognition as an actor capable of handling emotionally intense roles. The 1986 film “Ankush” cemented this reputation.

Nana Patekar’s talent was further acknowledged through his performance in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” and the critically acclaimed “Parinda,” where he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to rise as a leading man in movies like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor.

In addition to acting, Patekar explored filmmaking with his directorial debut “Prahaar” in 1991, where he also played a former army officer. His versatility was evident as he moved between lead and supporting roles across various genres, including comedy, as seen in his role as Uday Shetty in the 2007 film “Welcome.”

Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta accused him of sexual harassment on the set of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and the Mumbai police later filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This incident became part of India’s broader #MeToo movement.

Despite personal and professional controversies, Nana Patekar remained a respected figure in Indian cinema, known for his unique acting style and dedication to diverse roles. His contributions have influenced generations of actors, ensuring his place as one of India’s most distinctive performers.
