Malaysia Awaits Nepal’s Nod to Send DNA Experts for Disaster ID

-

In the aftermath of catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal, Malaysia is seeking to deploy DNA experts to assist in identifying victims. The Malaysian Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, announced that the country has requested Nepal’s approval for this mission. The DNA identification process is set to commence after the conclusion of search and rescue operations, with experts poised to match DNA from recovered bodies to samples provided by families of missing Malaysian nationals.

To date, Malaysia has gathered DNA samples from the relatives of 55 Malaysians who remain unaccounted for after the natural disasters. Due to the urgency and limited facilities, some bodies have been interred quickly, underscoring the necessity of DNA testing for proper identification.

The team heading to Nepal consists of 11 personnel and is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized equipment for tunnel rescues. Additionally, the team has brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their efforts.

Malaysia is hopeful that the integration of search, rescue, and DNA identification operations will aid in locating missing victims and offer families the needed closure regarding their loved ones.
