India is preparing to host the BRICS summit this September, with Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed to participate in the event scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi. As the current chair of the BRICS group, India will bring together leaders from the major emerging economies to discuss key global issues. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov announced President Putin’s attendance and noted the significance of this meeting for international cooperation.
In addition to attending the summit, President Putin is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping for bilateral talks on the sidelines of the event. This meeting underscores the strategic partnership and ongoing dialogue between Russia and China within the framework of BRICS, which has expanded in recent years to include new member countries.
President Putin’s upcoming visit marks his return to India, following his last visit in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. This visit is part of a broader pattern of diplomatic engagements, as earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov participated in a two-day conclave of BRICS member states in New Delhi.
The BRICS group originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa but has since grown to welcome Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024, with Indonesia joining in 2025. This expansion highlights the bloc’s increasing influence as a global platform, now representing 11 leading emerging economies. Collectively, these nations account for nearly 49.5% of the world’s population, about 40% of global GDP, and approximately 26% of global trade.
