How Your Old Toothbrush Feeds the “Vicious Cycle” of Diabetes

-

Your old toothbrush could be feeding a “vicious cycle” that makes your diabetes worse. A dental professional explains that the connection between your gums and your blood sugar is a “two-way relationship” that demands attention.
The cycle works like this: high blood sugar weakens your immunity, letting gum infections take root. These infections then release toxins that “interfere with insulin,” causing your blood sugar to climb even higher.
This destructive loop starts with the 700 species of bacteria in your mouth. When your toothbrush is old and its bristles are frayed, it can’t clean away the plaque they form. This plaque causes inflammation.
This inflammation is the gateway. It allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream, where they can affect your pancreas and also damage your heart by causing atherosclerosis (stiffened arteries).
The way to break the cycle is to “keep your teeth and gums clean.” This is “something as basic” as replacing your toothbrush every three months. A fresh brush is your best tool against the plaque that fuels this dangerous cycle.
