Centre Clarifies eKYC Rule: Mandatory Only for Unverified LPG Customers

-

The Government of India has clarified that eKYC is required only for “unauthenticated” LPG customers, addressing confusion over earlier communication. The move comes as the country manages supply concerns amid global tensions affecting fuel markets.

India has over 330 million LPG users, including beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The government stated that customers who have already completed their eKYC do not need to repeat the process. For PMUY beneficiaries, eKYC is mandatory to receive a deposit-free LPG connection and must be updated once every financial year to continue receiving subsidies.

Officials emphasized that LPG supply will not be affected for customers who have yet to complete eKYC. The process is aimed at improving transparency, identifying genuine beneficiaries, and preventing misuse or duplication of connections.

Under the current policy, eligible PMUY consumers receive a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to nine refills annually. State-run companies such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited continue to dominate LPG distribution across the country.
