WhatsApp is set to introduce a significant change in its communication dynamics by allowing users to connect through usernames instead of phone numbers. This new privacy feature is being gradually rolled out, enabling users to reserve unique usernames before the anticipated global launch later this year. Once implemented, initiating a chat will no longer require sharing mobile numbers; users can simply use these new usernames.
The process for setting up a username is straightforward. Users will be able to create a distinct handle within the app. In the event that a chosen username is already in use, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Importantly, there will not be a public directory for these usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the precise username can make contact, thereby enhancing privacy for users.
To check the availability of a username, WhatsApp users need to update their app and navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. Given the app’s massive user base, securing a desired username might be competitive, which is why the reservation process is initiated early. WhatsApp will notify users as the feature becomes accessible in their specific region.
An additional layer of security is provided through an optional “username key.” This feature allows users to share this key separately, thus controlling who can initiate a conversation with them. This development is not only advantageous for personal users but also for creators, businesses, and public accounts who might want to align their WhatsApp identity with their existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp emphasizes that adopting usernames is not mandatory. Users who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. As the feature gradually becomes available worldwide, users will receive in-app notifications to keep them informed of its rollout in their regions.
