Thailand Cancels 60-Day Visa-Free Travel for Indian Tourists

-

Thailand is revising its visa policies, ending the temporary 60-day visa-free entry scheme that was available to visitors from several countries, including India. This change signifies a return to stricter entry rules, potentially impacting how Indian tourists plan their future trips to this popular Asian destination. Under the new regulations, Indian citizens will need to either obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon their arrival in Thailand or apply for an e-Visa before their trip.

The Visa on Arrival will now allow Indian travelers a maximum stay of 15 days per entry, a significant reduction from the previous 60-day period. For those wishing to skip airport queues, the e-Visa system offers an online application process ahead of travel. Industry analysts suggest that these changes could discourage last-minute travel plans and immediate holiday bookings due to the additional steps, paperwork, and associated fees. Despite these challenges, Thailand remains a favored destination for Indian tourists because of its affordability, flight convenience, rich tourism offerings, and renowned hospitality.

This policy shift is anticipated to particularly affect those planning long-term stays, digital nomads, and travelers interested in extended multi-city tours. Some may look to other Southeast Asian countries with more relaxed entry requirements for longer stays. As per Thai authorities, these new visa regulations will be enacted 15 days following their announcement in the Royal Gazette. Travelers arriving in Thailand before this date will still be subject to the previous rules, allowing their stay to last until the initial entry period concludes.

Originally, Thailand’s visa-free access was extended in 2024 to rejuvenate tourism and bolster the economy after the pandemic. This initiative successfully increased visitor numbers and cemented Thailand’s status as a favored spot for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events. Officials point out that the decision to tighten entry requirements stems from concerns over visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and a need for enhanced immigration oversight. The new policy framework seeks to balance the growth of tourism with effective border management and regulatory control.

Travelers planning to visit Thailand are advised to stay informed about the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines to ensure a smooth travel experience. These adjustments come as Thailand aims to maintain its appeal as a travel destination while addressing immigration concerns and ensuring a regulated tourism environment.
