India clinched the Asian Games gold medal in men’s cricket after a tense 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final held at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. Batting first, India put up a formidable score of 211/6, thanks to a dynamic opening by Abhishek Sharma and a powerful finish by Tilak Varma.
Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a rapid half-century, propelling India to 81/2 during the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20 internationals. However, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to slow India’s momentum by taking crucial wickets during the middle overs.
Despite the mid-innings slowdown, Tilak Varma ensured a strong finish for India with an unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls. His partnership with Shivam Dube, who added 27 runs, was instrumental in pushing India’s total past the 200-run mark, setting Pakistan a challenging target of 212 runs.
In response, Pakistan mounted a strong chase, spearheaded by Hasan Nawaz, who scored an unbeaten 96 off 51 balls. His 87-run partnership with Saim Ayub put India under significant pressure as Pakistan sought to overtake the target.
However, India’s bowling attack regained control in the crucial final overs. Washington Sundar delivered a key 18th over that disrupted Pakistan’s momentum, while Jasprit Bumrah further tightened the pressure in the penultimate over. With 33 runs needed from the final over, India’s Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, securing the victory and the gold medal for India.
This win not only extended India’s dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals but also reaffirmed their status as the reigning champions in the Asian Games men’s cricket competition.
