India is advancing in its efforts to procure five more S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia. Moscow has already provided a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The final decision on this acquisition will be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security once the price is settled and the Finance Ministry gives its approval. The current contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is on track to be fulfilled with the last delivery scheduled for November 2026.
The additional S-400 systems are anticipated to bolster India’s air defense, especially along the eastern sector bordering China. The effectiveness of the S-400 was notably demonstrated during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, enhancing the argument for expanding India’s fleet of these systems. This expansion is part of India’s broader strategy to strengthen its defense capabilities amid regional tensions.
In contrast, India has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets, even though the Indian Air Force has shown interest. This consideration comes as China deploys its J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, prompting India to evaluate its own aerial capabilities and potential upgrades.
The proposed acquisition of additional S-400 systems is also likely to be a significant topic in broader defense discussions between India and Russia. These talks are expected to gain momentum with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September. This visit could further solidify the defense partnership between the two nations.
