‘We’ll See What Happens’: Trump Uncertain on China, Admits Tariffs ‘Not Sustainable’

-

President Donald Trump expressed significant uncertainty about the path forward with China, saying “I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see what happens,” even as he confirmed a meeting with President Xi Jinping.
His uncertainty is compounded by his admission that the administration’s high-tariff policy is “not sustainable.” He blamed China for this, claiming, “they forced me to do that.”
The meeting with Xi is scheduled for two weeks from now. Trump said he “get[s] along great” with the Chinese leader, but warned that “China is always looking for an edge.”
A 90-day truce that has paused the trade war is set to expire on November 10. This truce had stopped duties from reaching 145% and stoking fears of a global slowdown.
Trump’s goal remains a “fair deal.” He continues to justify the “unsustainable” tariffs as a necessary negotiating posture, arguing the US would be “a nothing” without them.
