A notable capability is being discontinued in ChatGPT’s Mac application. Starting January 15, 2026, voice conversation features will no longer be available through the macOS desktop app. OpenAI announced this change as part of its strategy to build more unified voice experiences across different platforms.
Mac users seeking voice functionality have multiple alternatives. The feature continues operating through the web-based ChatGPT interface, accessible from any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android devices. Windows desktop users also maintain their voice access. The Mac standalone app is the only platform affected.
OpenAI’s announcement lacks extensive technical justification. However, the language about unified experiences implies the Mac app’s current voice architecture may not be compatible with the company’s future vision. Voice interaction represents a growing priority as AI companies explore hardware products and deeper system integrations.
This change affects users with established workflows differently. Those requiring voice for accessibility accommodations, professionals using hands-free AI conversation, or individuals conducting lengthy verbal exchanges will all face adjustments. Alternative access methods may not replicate the desktop app experience.
Most industry analysts don’t view this as permanent. OpenAI’s ongoing investment in voice technology across its product portfolio suggests Mac users will eventually see voice return with improvements. The temporary removal likely facilitates infrastructure work that will eventually deliver enhanced capabilities.
