Trump accuses Canada of ‘cheating’ with Reagan ad, ends talks

-

President Trump has ended all trade talks with Canada, accusing the country of “cheating” with a “fake” ad featuring Ronald Reagan .
“Canada cheated and got caught,” Trump wrote on truth social. He claimed the ad was a “fraudulent” attempt to influence US supreme court hearings on his tariffs.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of reagan warning against protectionism. It was launched by premier Doug Ford to protest the 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods.
The ad is also facing legal threats from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They claim the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the 1987 speech and was used without permission.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a vital trade relationship, as over 75% of Canadian exports go to the US.
