PM Modi Embarks on Five-Nation Tour: Highlighting Defence, Africa Outreach, and Multilateral Engagements

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant five-nation tour from July 2-9, visiting Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The extensive itinerary is expected to center on strengthening defence cooperation, deepening engagement with African nations, and participating in key multilateral discussions, including the BRICS summit.
A major focus of the tour will be defence collaboration, with Brazil showing keen interest in India’s defence technology. During Mr. Modi’s visit to Brazil from July 5-8, discussions are anticipated to cover secure communication systems for battlefields, offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), maintenance partnerships for Scorpene submarines, the Akash surface-to-air missile system, coastal surveillance systems, and Garuda artillery guns. This comes as Brazil explores more secure communication and has previously utilized India’s Akash system in Operation Sindoor. The BRICS summit in Brazil will also be a highlight, with Mr. Modi participating in the main session on July 6, where “Reform of the Global Governance” will be a key topic. Other summit discussions will encompass “Peace and Security,” “Environment, COP 30 and Global Health,” bolstering multilateralism, economic and financial affairs, and Artificial Intelligence. India is slated to chair BRICS in 2026.
In Argentina, Prime Minister Modi will hold his first full-fledged meeting with President Javier Gerardo Milei. The agenda for their talks is expected to include defence, rare earth minerals, agriculture, traditional and renewable energy, and trade and investment. India is also expected to reiterate its concerns regarding cross-border terrorism during the BRICS meeting in Brazil and discussions in Argentina.
The Prime Minister’s tour begins in Ghana on July 2-3, where discussions will focus on agriculture, establishing a vaccine development hub in West Africa, critical minerals, digital public infrastructure, and the renewal of cultural exchange programs. This visit is particularly timely as Ghana undergoes economic restructuring under its newly elected President, John Dramani Mahama.
Following Ghana, Mr. Modi will visit Trinidad and Tobago on July 3-4, marking the first Prime Minister-level visit from India since 1999. The visit coincides with the country commemorating 180 years since the arrival of Indian immigrants and holds added significance as Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is of Indian origin.
The final stop on the tour will be Namibia, where Prime Minister Modi will pay tribute to the late Namibian decolonization icon Sam Nujoma. A significant outcome expected from this visit is the signing of an agreement on unified payment interoperability. India’s engagement with Africa reflects the continent’s growing aspirations for in-country manufacturing and value addition.
