How a “Choice Screen” Could Reshape the UK’s Entire Digital Landscape

-

The proposal of a mandatory “choice screen” for search engines is more than just a minor tweak; it’s a potentially revolutionary measure that could reshape the UK’s entire digital landscape. This single intervention, proposed by the Competition and Market Authority (CMA) as part of its new powers over Google, strikes at the very foundation of how tech giants maintain their dominance.
The power of defaults is one of the most potent forces in technology. Most users stick with the pre-set options on their phones and browsers, which gives an enormous advantage to the company that can afford to pay for that default placement. Google has spent billions to be the default search engine on Apple’s iPhones and other platforms, a key factor in its 90%+ market share.
A choice screen shatters this default advantage. By forcing an active choice upon the user, it creates a moment of genuine competition. Suddenly, smaller players like DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, or new AI-powered services like Perplexity are on an equal footing with Google, at least for that initial selection. Even a small percentage of users choosing an alternative could translate into millions of people switching, creating a viable user base for competitors overnight.
This could have a domino effect. A more diverse search market would lead to a more diverse search advertising market, giving businesses more options and potentially lowering costs. It would also encourage more investment in new search technologies, as startups would see a realistic path to acquiring users.
While the practical implementation will be complex, the principle is simple: replace a paid-for default with a genuine choice. If successful, this model could be applied to other digital markets, from app stores to social media, fundamentally altering the balance of power between consumers and the platforms that dominate their digital lives.
