Taking your dog into the great outdoors is a fantastic way to travel, but it requires specific preparation. Hiking and camping come with their own set of rules and safety considerations to ensure the wilderness stays wild and your hound stays safe.
Know the trail’s rules. Not all trails or campgrounds are dog-friendly. Always check the regulations of the park or forest you plan to visit. Many national parks have strict rules about where dogs are allowed. When permitted, they are almost always required to be on a leash.
Pack their own gear. Your dog needs their own hiking pack with essentials. This should include a collapsible water bowl, plenty of extra water, high-energy snacks or their regular food, and poop bags to practice “Leave No Trace.” A pet first-aid kit with supplies for paw injuries or insect bites is also a must.
Protect them from wildlife and pests. Ensure your dog’s flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives are up to date. Be aware of the local wildlife, such as snakes or bears, and know the safety protocols. Never let your dog chase or harass wild animals. A well-prepared adventure hound is a happy and safe one.
