A Calculated Risk: Trump Gambles with India Partnership to Isolate Russia

-

President Donald Trump is taking a calculated risk, gambling his country’s strategic partnership with India in a high-stakes bid to economically isolate Russia. His accusatory speech at the UN General Assembly shows he is willing to alienate a key Indo-Pacific ally to achieve his immediate objective of ending the war in Ukraine on his terms.
The gamble is clear: by publicly branding India a “primary funder” of the war and hitting it with 50% tariffs, Trump is betting that the pressure will force New Delhi to abandon its Russian oil purchases. The desired outcome is to choke off a vital source of revenue for the Kremlin, thereby weakening its ability to wage war.
However, the risk is enormous. This aggressive strategy could backfire spectacularly, pushing India further away from the US and reinforcing its commitment to strategic autonomy. It could damage decades of goodwill and cooperation, undermining the broader US goal of building a coalition of democracies to balance China in the Indo-Pacific.
Trump seems to believe the risk is worth it. His speech, where he advocated for “powerful tariffs” as a quick solution to the war, suggests he sees economic coercion as a silver bullet. He is prioritizing the short-term goal of a victory in Ukraine over the long-term health of the US-India partnership.
The speech also included his familiar but disputed claim about preventing an India-Pakistan war, a secondary move that adds diplomatic insult to geopolitical injury. For India, the message is that it is being treated not as a valued partner, but as a subordinate state whose policies must bend to Washington’s will, a perception that could have lasting negative consequences for the relationship.
